4. Do you have treatment suggestions or therapy materials?
The Aphasia Institute caters to adults with aphasia because we have been able to identify common needs within this group. We endeavour to create through our programs, an opportunity for adults with aphasia to rebuild a community for themselves. The following are key criteria:
- a warm and caring environment
- people, at our Centre, who understand about “living with aphasia”
- people who believe that in spite of the communication difficulty, adults with aphasia have opinions and ideas
- skilled communication partners that we train in the use of Supported Conversation Techniques
- providing opportunities for adults with aphasia to engage in interesting adult conversations.
We hope that when clients participate in our conversation groups, they actually “forget” about their aphasia. Our approach is to train the conversation partners of our clients to communicate with them using Supported Conversation Techniques and to focus more on the content and excitement of a conversation rather than how the information is transacted between individuals.
The Institute is a place where on any given day there may be 40 or more adults participating in a communication program. Adults are encouraged to share their experiences.
