Volunteer Roles

Volunteering at the Aphasia Institute provides you with the opportunity to learn new skills and become part of an innovative approach to managing aphasia.

Most of our volunteers work directly with clients in our Introductory Program, Community Aphasia Program and outreach In-Home Visiting Program as communication facilitators or assistants. Others volunteer in areas such as administration, fundraising or governance.

As a volunteer you will receive training in Supported Conversation for Adults with Aphasia (SCA™) and ongoing support provided by our team of speech-language pathologists, social workers and communicative disorder assistants. Our volunteer training also includes opportunities to practice your newly acquired skills through role-playing and working in small groups with people with aphasia.

Volunteering at the Aphasia Institute offers you the opportunity to:

  • acquire new skills
  • participate in the delivery of our innovative communication programs
  • receive ongoing training provided by our interprofessional healthcare team
  • join a teaching and learning environment
  • make a difference in the life of someone who has aphasia
  • be part of our warm, supportive and communicatively accessible community

Volunteer Opportunities at the Aphasia Institute include:

  • Communication Group Facilitators
  • Outreach In-Home Communication Facilitators
  • Assistants – music, art, creative writing, computer, and/or exercise programs
  • Kitchen/Snack Area Volunteert
  • Office Assistant
