It all Started With a Cup of Coffee (Aphasia-Friendly) – Aphasia Institute

Alex’s Story

It all started with a cup of coffee
For me it was a cup of coffee at the Aphasia Institute

I remember group discussion and coffee

It was a turning point for me

I came to the Aphasia Institute

9 months after my stroke

I was in a group and had coffee

I knew then

My new life starts NOW!

I keep looking forward toward the future

I am a member of the Aphasia Institute community

I felt the power of communication

I participate in music and art programs

In the Creative Expressions group
I was chosen to exhibit

My philosophy is:

“Try everything. Start.
Don’t sit down. Now!”

I draw with my left hand

“Help, Hope, Possible” – Ink on Paper, © 2014

Mountain with three people holding hands

I share my story and encourage others.

I give others hope

I help others see possibilities

I say . . .

“Every day is better.”

At the Aphasia Institute

The Aphasia Institute makes life better

for people with aphasia and their families

I say, it’s important to say “thank you.”

Thank you, Alex

You are an inspiration to all

"Volunteering at the Aphasia Institute has been an amazing experience. It’s such a great feeling to help someone express themselves, or help someone understand another’s message. It can be challenging sometimes, but that just makes the moment a connection goes through that much more special. More than anything, I really appreciate the strong sense of community that the Aphasia Institute creates and being a part of that community."
