Training Programs & Workshops – Aphasia Institute

Your safety and those of our Aphasia Institute members and staff are of utmost importance to us. During the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic, we are offering online virtual training for many of our workshops. Details below.

The Aphasia Institute offers training sessions for health care professionals on how to work with clients with aphasia and to help them overcome communication barriers. Health care professionals will be shown how to apply training techniques to clinical situations such as assessment, counselling, group therapy and working with clients and their communication partners. Resources, materials and manuals are provided in many of the workshops.

Basic SCA™ Training Options

Core Training (2-day)
Day One/A2 – Through role-playing and experiential learning, trainees will gain a solid theoretical understanding of SCA™.

Day Two/A3 – Trainees will continue to develop SCA™ skills by working with individuals with aphasia* and learn how to apply the principles to their own work setting.

Advanced/Applied SCA™ Training Options

Participants who work with groups will learn to adapt SCA™ to a group setting. Intermediate level

Participants will learn counselling principals, themes and approaches utilized by SLPs and Social Workers at the Aphasia Institute in the context of the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA). Participants will learn how to make counselling accessible to people with aphasia through the use of SCA™ techniques.

COMING SOON

Participants proficient in SCA™ will learn how to help people with aphasia co-construct their identity through personal narratives – their past, present and future through the use of the Your Life story-telling program which can be adapted to individual or group work.

This workshop teaches Speech-Language Pathologists proficient in SCA™ to help people affected by aphasia become better communication partners.

This full-day workshop will teach Speech-Language Pathologists how to teach other healthcare professionals an introduction to SCA™. The focus of this workshop will be to review the content of this training program and to provide a framework for how to teach it. Intermediate level
