Training Programs & Workshops – Aphasia Institute

The Aphasia Institute offers training sessions for health care professionals on how to work with clients with aphasia and to help them overcome communication barriers. Health care professionals will be shown how to apply training techniques to clinical situations such as assessment, counselling, group therapy and working with clients and their communication partners. Resources, materials and manuals are provided in many of the workshops.

Basic SCA™ Training Options

Core Training (2-day)
Day One – Through role-playing and experiential learning, trainees will gain a solid theoretical understanding of SCA™.
Day Two – Trainees will continue to develop SCA™ skills by working with individuals with aphasia* and learn how to apply the principles to their own work setting.

We are offering this training FREE virtually for health care providers working in Ontario. ($888 value) Spaces limited.

**Pre-requisite: Online Introduction to SCA™ eLearning module

Advanced/Applied SCA™ Training Options

Participants who work with groups will learn to adapt SCA™ to a group setting.

Through observation, participants will learn about planning and implementing programs within the Life Participation Model, training and supervising volunteers, working with families and working within an interdisciplinary team.

Participants will learn counselling principals, themes and approaches utilized by SLPs and Social Workers at the Aphasia Institute in the context of the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA). Participants will learn how to make counselling accessible to people with aphasia through the use of SCA™ techniques.

SLPs proficient in SCA™ will learn how to run a program to teach people with aphasia and their communication partners how to communicate better with each other
Pre-requisite: Core Training & restricted to SLPs

Participants proficient in SCA™ will learn how to help people with aphasia co-construct their identity through personal narratives – their past, present and future through the use of the Your Life story-telling program which can be adapted to individual or group work.

SLPs proficient in SCA™ will learn how to teach basic SCA™ techniques to other healthcare professionals.
